The National Regulators Community of Practice Victorian Chapter held its first regional event in Bendigo, bringing together regulators, policy practitioners and public sector professionals from across the region.

Hosted by the Portable Long Service Authority (PLSA) at Galkangu Bendigo GovHub on 13 October 2026, the event provided an opportunity to discuss careers in regulation, the role of regional regulatory practice and the importance of regional perspectives in shaping policy and regulatory outcomes.

The panel discussion featured industry experts who recognised the opportunity to build a rewarding career outside metropolitan areas.

“Careers in regulation are not limited to metro. This event recognises that people can build meaningful and impactful careers in regional communities, enjoying the benefits of living close to where they work and serve, whilst contributing to state and national activity and discussions" said Emma Starkey, Head of Enforcement with the Portable Long Service Authority, and Bendigo local, who also appeared as a panellist.

The event also highlighted the value of regional infrastructure such as Galkangu Bendigo GovHub in connecting local professionals and communities with national professional networks.

By bringing together regulators and policy professionals from across the Bendigo region, the event allowed panellists to discuss the benefits, challenges and opportunities of regulation in local settings. It also ensured regional perspectives are represented in discussions regarding business and community regulation and policy.

“This event highlights the important contribution regional Victoria makes to regulation and public policy. The National Regulators Community of Practice Victorian Chapter’s first regional event in Bendigo has created an opportunity to connect professionals across the region, share insights and ensure regional perspectives are part of state-wide and national conversations.” said Stephanie Morrow, Co-Chair National Regulators Community of Practice Victorian Chapter.

The discussion explored the role regulation plays in everyday life, including rules and protections that people may not always notice but which support fair, safe and well-functioning communities.

The PLSA’s head office is located in Bendigo and employs more than 100 staff. The Authority administers Victoria’s Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme for eligible employers and workers in the community services, contract cleaning and security sectors.

Ms Starkey said the strong attendance reflected growing interest in regional professional networks.

“We were pleased to support this event and see strong engagement from Bendigo professionals. We are already considering future opportunities to build on this momentum. It is important regional voices are part of broader professional networks and discussions,” said Emma Starkey.
