For the second time in 2025, leaders from Australia’s nine state and territory-based portable long service leave authorities came together under the AusLeave banner to strengthen national cooperation and share insights that support millions of Australian workers.
The 2025 AusLeave Conference was held online on Thursday, 30 October, and provided an important forum for collaboration between jurisdictions responsible for supporting more than two million Australian workers across industries such as building and construction, community services, contract cleaning, and security.
This conference is about ensuring that all workers, no matter where or how they work, can access the long service benefits they’ve earned. Working together nationally allows us to deliver fairer, more consistent outcomes for employees and employers alike.
Across Australia, portable long service leave is governed by state and territory legislation and ensures that workers who move between employers or projects can still accrue long service leave entitlements. In industries such as building and construction, where short-term or project-based work is common, portable schemes have provided vital continuity for workers over the past 40 years.
Each state and territory administer its own scheme, supported by a National Reciprocal Agreement that allows construction work undertaken across borders to count towards a worker’s long service leave entitlement. Together, these schemes operating under the banner of AusLeave, manage more than $5 billion in funds held for the benefit of Australian workers.
The AusLeave initiative also provides a central information point for employers and workers, promoting cooperation between jurisdictions to better serve industries that operate nationally.
Every state and territory authority is unique, but we share a common purpose which is to protect and reward long-term service. AusLeave helps us align our efforts and share best practices to ensure sustainable and equitable outcomes.
